Early the next morning, having decided that Groat was still deep asleep in whatever hovel he called home, Jenna ventured onto the streets and made purchase of a small packet of stationery and an envelope. She spent more than she had planned, but she knew the letter must look presentable if it were to be taken seriously by the authorities.

Back in her tavern room, with Hector and Teresa still asleep across the hall, she labored long and hard over the contents. At last she was through, having related exactly what she had heard and the general location in which she had heard it.

She also described both men, giving particular attention to Groat. She would have preferred accusing him to his face, with the authorities looking on, but she knew that was not possible.

She also would have preferred knowing the gentleman's name and the exact date of the planned robbery. She didn't think it was far off.

Once the correspondence was posted, she went to the lodging house where Morgan and his children lived. To her surprise, the juggler, normally a daytime sleeper, was not home, and she spent a while visiting his children, expressing pleasure over the new clothes each had been given by their father and even more pleasure over the food he had bought.

She did not linger over a long goodbye. They would know something was wrong—especially Alfred, who let little escape him. Besides, to stay longer would have meant breaking into tears.

Alice and Alfred had been her strength during the past months that she had known them, her reason for going on, and she knew that she had been theirs. They must all remain so for each other.

Thus, when Alice asked her if she would return later in the day, she lied and said that she would try. She also assured them that they were not to worry, that if something unforeseen occurred and she could not get back right away, they should know that she was all right, and that she would be with them again as soon as she could.

It seemed a poor farewell, but it was all she could manage. At least she had been able to see them for the last time and part with a gentle hug and loving thoughts. Later, when she found a new place of refuge, she would write to Morgan. Somehow, she vowed, she would see that these precious children were all right.

She concentrated all her thoughts on the twins. If for one moment she let her thoughts wander, she would find unthinkable memories and bitter regrets drifting through her mind.

Slowly she made her way back to the Black Horse, her eyes on the lookout for Bertie Groat, her thoughts in a tumble. Knowing she would not return for possibly a long time, she had lied to the twins. And she had repeatedly lied to ... to someone else. The fact that this someone had lied to her in turn with a wild story about being the son of an earl did not lessen her feeling of guilt.
